Response to assessment

On Monday 23rd May at 3:13 I had my assessment with my tutor. Within this assessment my tutor asked me if I had created a sketchbook if it was all blogged within my blog work, and as I hadn’t brought it in with me to my assessment to bring it in on Friday. I was also asked if my project proposal was completed on the UAL sheet which it wasn’t, so I was asked to change this and copy and paste everything onto the UAL sheet. I was also asked to create a powerpoint presentation about my project and was given a deadline for the end of the half term.

I was also asked what I most enjoyed about the course which was looking at the different artists, looking through the different art galleries and looking into fashion drawings and different fashion designers as this is something I have wanted to look into for a while. I was also asked what I enjoyed the least which was creating my final piece as it was a very tedious piece to create.

Over the year I have been in college I have learnt new skills and progressed and developed these skills I have learnt. In the A-Z project I have learnt about stitching and the different kind of stitches I could use which I have used in this project. I learnt about the laser cutter which I had planned on using in this project. I learnt about figure drawing in the ident project which I have used throughout this project as well.

During this final project of the year I had planned to create a dress out of newspaper to show the awareness of recycling and re-using different projects. I had also planned on developing my drawing skills and creating a final piece which would show what I would like to do in a future career, which was fashion designing.

In my brief I was asked to build up a blog of artist research, experimentations, and a sketchbook to develop my ideas to create a independent final piece for Unit 8.

The theme of my project was recycling, re-using and reducing and looking at the importance of this. I approached this in my project by trying to show what you can create from re-using and recycling material and how far you can go with this for example creating a dress. I also wanted to show how much wastage we use and how it pollutes the earth, I approached this by creating a dress out of a lot of magazine papers which have been recycled and this shows how much wastage we use as I have accomplished creating a human sized dress/sculpture out of magazine papers making lots of roses to decorate it and layered the magazines up into about three layers to make sure it’s strong and sturdy.

I wanted to develop time management skills, develop the amount of patience I have on an art project and develop my independence on this project as well drawing, sculpturing and photography skills.

Summary of research-

I went on a few trip to different art galleries for primary research. I went to Manchester Art Gallery, The Tate Museum (Liverpool), The Walker Art Museum, The World Museum and The Abbot Hall art gallery. When I went to these museums I saw a mixture of different dresses, sculptures and drawings. A few of the artists that inspired me at these museums where Micheangelo Pistoletto, Issey Miyake and Laura Ford.

I went around Grasmere taking photos of the rubbish on the streets trying to show the importance of recycling and how it pollutes our earth visually. Artists I looked at concluded a mixture of fashion illustrators, fashion designers and recycling artists. I looked at a mixture of Chris Jordan, ALexander McQueen, Ariel Mazo and Zoe Bradley. Alexander McQueen, was  my main influence in my project, he is an artist I have looked at throughout my whole project. Alexander McQueen inspired me because of his abstract designs and how in his catwalks he goes all out and I wanted my sculpture have a quite abstract look within it’s design for example all the little flowers in one of my designs I got of Alexander McQueen and then in my other design the kind of dress I designed I found inspiration from Alexander McQueen. I don’t think there are clear views of McQueens work between my work however the links are there and I don’t think there are clear links between our works as other artists inspired my designs as well for example the idea of the actual shape of the dress and the detail within the dress.

Throughout this project I looked at a mixture of books to help me with my drawing skills and these books also helped me with finding a few different fashion illustrators that inspired me with my drawings. I also used internet website and galleries to find information about my inspirational artists and then I also did a few interviews one with a  photographer and one with a fashion designers towards my artist research but this also contributed towards my progression unit as it gave me a better idea of the careers I was looking into.

Experimentation and development-

I took part in a drawing workshop which involved using a viewfinder and drawing from photos in one of my classes however I didn’t do many workshops within this project as most of the work I have done within this project I have done within my last projects and I didn’t need a workshop for it so I just linked workshops from my last projects into this project. I slightly developed my skills I had already had through this project for example my sewing, drawing and sculpting skills.

I started to develop in my project by using skills I have learnt about in my past projects and re-using them skills, I started with drawing and using newspaper in my drawings to try and think what the design would look like in 3D designed as a dress our of newspaper. I used different coloured papers to experiment with different drawings in different artists styles. I experimented with paper manipulation on recycled paper and what different textures you can form with paper, I cut into it and created spikes to experiment and see what different things I may do with my designs. I also created pin up dresses as experimentations to look at different ways I can shape different recyclable material and how I have to fold it and place it to make dresses.

In my experimentations a mixture of things went wrong for example in my drawings my waterpaint drawings weren’t as strong as my pencil drawings which showed this is one of weaknesses painting and that is something I’d have to develop with through out future projects.

Planning and doing experimentations helped me with creating my final piece as it gave me a chance to experiment with different paper experimentations and to test what I would like for my final piece and to see if I should create a dress out of magazines/newspapers or create it out of carrier bags and bottle tops however I didn’t like the colours when I created my pin up dress experimentations, I also didn’t really like the short dresses in my experimentation which led me to creating a long dress. Cutting into paper and manipulating paper in different ways also gave me an idea of what different things you can do with paper and how it isn’t at all flexible and making a dress out of paper and sewing it would be very difficult and take a lot of time which also led me to creating a sculpture as a dress. Realising I wasn’t as strong with painting made me do the rest of my drawings with pencils and when I did my pencil drawings I tried to add more detail within these drawings like adding mark making and shading which I’d lacked in my paintings.

Final Outcome-

Within my final outcome I used, recycled magazine papers, glue guns, PVA glue and thread. I used the recycled magazine papers to create the dress, I used the glue gun to create the roses and stick them to my dress, I used PVA glue and thread to create the base of my dress as I stitched and glued it together to make it sturdy and to stop it all from collapsing in on it’s self.

I cam across a few problems when I was creating my dress the first problem I came across was that when I stitching my dress together the paper easily ripped when I sewed it together if I didn’t stitch it in a specific way to be able to fit around the mannequin and not put tension on the paper. I solved this problem by un pinning the whole dress and trying to bring the dress slightly forward when I sewed to either create a small rip which I would easily be able to go over with another layer of the dress.

I also came across a problem with the pva glue it made the dress to wet and I tried to sew it with it being wet and ripped it, I did this because I wanted to make sure the dress didn’t lose shape or collapse inwards however I couldn’t sew it. After leaving it to dry I noticed it had lost shape dew to the mannequin being broken and I had to bend the dress at the back and change the shape of the dress which led me to creating a train and removing the mermaid style dress, this brought up the front of the dress when I sorted out all the folds so I had to add more to the front of the dress, add magazine paper to create the train and then I added paper over the folds I glued together to keep the fold stuck together.

I then came across the problem of the roses taking so long to create as each rose takes about 5 minutes to make so this was very time consuming and I then realised I wouldn’t be able to make enough roses to cover the whole dress like I had planned after creating the alterations and so I decided to just do the bottom quarter of the dress in roses and the bust part of the dress in roses, I got this done by creating roses over the weekend and then going in on the day it was due early in the morning before we had to stop work and stick all my roses down and then take pictures of it from each angle and put them on the blog the day before which led to me not managing my time as well as I wanted to do at the beginning of my project.

I am pleased with my final outcome as I have put a lot of time and effort into making it what it is however I would be more pleased with the dress if I had had time to finnish the dress which I learn for future projects that I need to plan out my timing more correctly. On the other hand the flowers I had created I was pleased with as they took me a long time to create and when creating the base of the dress I came across a lot of problems with the production of it which I overcame so overall I am happy with the final outcome of my dress/sculpture.

I have presented my final outcome on a mannequin as I was unable to get time to take it off the mannequin and do studio photography with the dress to try and neaten up the presentation of it.

I met all the deadlines that I was set in this project, what I enjoyed most about this project was drawing my fashion illustrations and seeing my skills develop as my drawings skills got better at the end of the project after looking at youtube tutorials and looking through the books I looked at for artist research. I also enjoyed researching the different artists and visiting art galleries as it gave me a wide perspective of different artists and different artists styles and inspiration towards my project.

If I had to do this project again and had to change anything I would change my time management so I am able to finish my dress and be able to see it finished. I would also have liked to have had time to create more experimentation within my project and look more into recycling artists as I looked a lot at fashion illustration artists but didn’t do much artist research on artists that use recycled materials.

I see my work progressing from this point in time to get me into my second year of college, and then hopefully develop and progress my skills to get onto the foundation course then go ahead to university. Within my skills I’d like to progress in my work to develop my drawing skills, painting skills, sculpturing skills and try and experiment more within my project and use a mixture of different medias and materials to develop these skills and to get me into my future educations.
